motivational speakers don't know how addiction works

he told me
"the easiest way to stop an addiction
is to never start one"

ah but it wasn't a choice
sometimes you don't even know you're addicted
until it's too late

"only this one time"
i said to myself
"i can stop at any time"

it was a lie
and by the time i realized
i was too far in to stop

when i did realize i was addicted
i just didn't care
because if addiction is such a bad thing
why did it feel so good?

addiction manipulates you
addiction give you an illusion of control
addiction will destroy you
As of today, I'm six months clean of my addiction! I thought I'd post a little something celebratory because last time I posted something about it, I was only six weeks clean. I'm so glad that I got this far.
In health class today, we listened to a ted talk about addiction, and one of the main points was "the easiest way to stop an addiction is to never start one". This piece is about my experience with addiction and how it's not that simple.

Wonderful! I'm actually going to be doing something of a motivational talk myself, any suggestions on how to address everyone?

that's HUGE, River! Seriously so proud- and this piece is super important, too! Someone doesn't "choose" to be addicted smh- TedTalks sometimes miss the point entirely.

Oh wow congratulations! I'm so happy for you!! And, yeah I'd agree that motivational speakers sometimes just don't know what they're talking about. Usually it's not as easy as that. Anyway, keep it up!! You got this!!

Congrats on being six months clean! I'm so proud of you! And, yeah I agree, a lot of times advice like that isn't helpful; I'm battling addictions right now, and I didn't consciously "choose" to start these habits. But I'm really glad that you found the courage to combat these feelings! Best wishes, and I'm always here if you need to talk :)
