What's His Name [Edited Lyrics]

February 18, 2021

FREE WRITING

4

[VERSE 1]
I know you're tired
Of hearing the same advice
But it works, 'cause I've tried
A time or two to get over a guy

[VERSE 2]
Dear girl, you've cried
Enough tears to flood the Mississippi
I've done it right along with you
And I've pulled myself together too

[PRE-CHORUS]
So wash your face
Dry your eyes
Put him out of your mind

[CHORUS]
Pick yourself up
For a pick-me-up
Stop waiting for his pick-up truck
Let's lose ourselves in laughter 'til you forget

Ol' what's his name
We'll call up all our friends
You can dance in the arms of a new somebody
And ask him
What's his name

[VERSE 3]
What you need, right now
Is to relax and let go
Remember how it used to be
And live like he never happened

[PRE-CHORUS]
So fix your hair
And lose the self-pity
'Cause you're worth more than that, honey

[CHORUS]
Pick yourself up
For a pick-me-up
Stop waiting for his pick-up truck
We're losing ourselves in laughter 'til you forget
Ol' what's his name

We're calling up all our friends
You're dancing in the arms of a new somebody
So ask him
What's his name

[INSTRUMENTAL]

[BRIDGE]
Oh, I realize
It feels just about impossible
In the moment
To do anything besides lay there
But we both know
You won't regret it
When you...

[CHORUS]
Pick yourself up
For a pick-me-up
Stop waiting for his pick-up truck
We lost ourselves in laughter 'til you forgot
Ol' what's his name

We called up all our friends
You danced in the arms of a new somebody
You asked him
What's his name

We lost ourselves in laughter
You danced in the arms of a new somebody
You asked him
What's his name

[OUTRO]
How does that feel
To have picked yourself up
What a pick-me-up
Can't even recall the color of his pick-up truck
Ol' what's his name
What's his name

[OUTRO, SPOKEN]
"Hey, what's your name?"
I didn't mean to write a country song. Because this is definitely and fully country, not just in the lyrics, but how I want it to sound. But I was listening to The Greatest Hits Collection by Brooks & Dunn, and a line about "what's his name" caught my attention. And I love songs where a line has double meaning, like Carly Pearce's "Next Girl" and Maddie & Tae's "One Heart to Another." And this was born.
It's kind of based on "Bathroom Floor" by Maddie & Tae.
I don't necessarily endorse anything in this song.

i knew it was a country song without reading the footnotes. it can fit red, i guess a sequel to '22' musically but lyrically to 'sad beautiful tragic'?!

Replying: Wow, I love psychology as well! And yes, I absolutely agree with you. People are so profoundly fascinating, inside and out, that sometimes I think we're not even close to knowing our true being. Humans can be a bundle of contradictions sometimes haha. I play the piano, ukulele, and guitar, and have been eyeing flute and violin for some time now but mother's against me gahh.

My country heart's throbbing ahhh this is beautiful! I'm actually a silent fan of country music myself (yes, silent, bc idk but people say my taste is weird for liking it ugh). Haven't heard heard of the artists/bands you mentioned but I have this feeling they'd flood my playlist pretty soon haha. Maybe you have some recommendations? I'm also up for any genres :)

Definitely full country! I really like the rhythm of these lyrics and the chorus is super catchy! I love all music genres and I think that everyone can find songs from all genres to enjoy so I think it's really cool that you decided to try writing a country song! You did a fantastic job :)

Re: Yeah, totally! And most other kids have always found it ironic about sports for me. I am terrible at sports and I don't even like them, but everyone is always like, "Hey, you should try out for volleyball or basketball! I bet you would be so good at those since you're tall." But I have literally never been able to hit the volleyball. I'm so much of a scaredy cat that I always (not on purpose) run away from the ball when it comes near me. So... yeah. XD
