She's Like Alaska (with a recording now)

Verse One

I don’t love what she does
But I love who she could be
The girl that I once knew
Who she was with me
I can’t let go
Cause I’m scared if she falls
I’ll be the first one
The ambulance calls
I keep my phone beside me
And never on silent
She’s one of the reckless
The young and the violent.

Chorus

She’s like Alaska

But harder to find
What’s going on in her
Tangled up mind?
I wish I knew
I wish I didn’t care
What she was thinking
And if life was fair
She’d be the mountains
And I’d be the sea
And she'd always be there
waiting for me.

Verse Two

I know it’s not perfect
And I’d never pretend
That I’m what she needs
But at least I’m still her friend
I didn’t leave
When the world tumbled down
The most I can do
Is be here on the ground
While she stares at the sky
And a shadow holds her hand
I’m not an angel
But they’re in high demand

Chorus

She’s like Alaska

But harder to find
What’s going on in her
Tangled up mind?
I wish I knew
I wish I didn’t care
What she was thinking
And if life was fair
She’d be the mountains
And I’d be the sea
And she'd  always be there
waiting for me.

Verse Three

I know it’s more dangerous
For us to walk to the brink
But as we play balance
It does make us think
Of the days she never
Tried too hard to pretend
That she was what she isn’t
That she knows how far to bend
Just enough without breaking
Just enough to fit in
Priceless and fragile
A breathtaking ten
I wish she knew
How much more she’ll risk
I don’t want our memories
On a funeral disk

Chorus

She’s like Alaska
But harder to find
What’s going on in her
Tangled up mind?
I wish I knew
I wish I didn’t care
What she was thinking
And if life was fair
She’d be the mountains
And I’d be the sea
And she'd always be there
waiting for me.

I wrote the words and when we have a recording up, that performance will be by my best friend and I. She's composing the music right now.

Just putting this back out here, I think it's easy for things to get lost with all these awesome submissions coming in!

My impression overall of the song is that it's about a friend who struggles with their mental health. Super powerful and impactful lyrics - I'm in awe of this song!

There are a lot of beautiful lines in this. In particular, I love the descriptions surrounding the phone from the first verse -- "I can't let go cause I'm scared if she falls I'll be the first one the ambulance calls" is very powerful and beautifully describes painful feelings.

I honestly think this is great as it is. If you wanted to do a little more, I would rework a few of the cliched lines like "when the world tumbled down" -- it's okay to use cliches but it can be even more impactful to take the same idea and try to tell it in 100% your own words.

Such a beautiful idea and execution. I love the book 'Looking for Alaska' so I very much appreciate the reference to that in the chorus. You're incredibly talented!
