hey! any peer reviews are so, so appreciated -- I don't usually write poetry or songs so this is a bit of a different experience for me -- and if you have anything to say, I'd love to hear it :)

kerosene

February 5, 2021

(softly)
firefly sparks drifting around,
flickering flames threatening to ensnare...
we smell of kerosene,
on our clothes, our breath
in our eyes...

(gently)
you never smelled of kerosene.
I don't know who you are
but you're not one of them--
tell me...
have you ever seen
the dew on the ground (the mechanical hound...)

(stronger)
burning...
does it give you any
satisfaction
even when you know that you're killing
history
people's stories...

(quieter)
just stop awhile...
I can't stop...

breathe in the air,
sit on your porch...
I can't do that...

(louder)
you never smelled of kerosene.
I don't know who you are
but you're not one of them--
tell me...
have you ever seen
the dew on the ground (anguished: the mechanical hound...)

(incessant overlapping)
you don't have to burn (I have to burn).
and if you do turn it away
from the people's stories,
the lives that you decay (I only make)--
can't you just see
that you're not happy (realization: I'm not happy, happy...)

(stronger)
burning...
does it give you any (it doesn't give me any
satisfaction (satisfaction
even when you know that you're killing (when I'm killing
history (history
people's stories...(people's stories...)

(softly)
you never smelled of kerosene.
I know who you are
and you're not one of them--
tell me...
have you ever seen
the dew on the ground (there's no more mechanical hound...)

(very soft)
are you happy?...
I don't know but someday...
I will be.
perhaps you picked up on it, but this song is one based on Fahrenheit 451 -- specifically, featuring the dialogue between Clarisse and Montag, two fascinating characters in a world where that's not allowed. here, I tried to explore their unique relationship.

This piece is so good!! I cannot get over your talent and the way you demonstrate your emotions in the piece. Also, I feel like the way you organized the piece was just brilliant. Thank you for sharing this piece. I cannot wait to see what else you write! Your songs are wayyyy better than mine!
