PROMPT: Memory Object

6
it was after our last showing of the wizard of oz
i was a winkie dancing in the back of the chorus
you were the only one who showed up
for me
with a grin on your face
and a surprise behind your back
a rose dahlia with a thousand petals
and a hug

how i fantasized of kissing you
of holding your hand
too shy too insecure too perilous
so i held the stem with trembling fingers
and brought the petals to my lips

i put it on my windowsill
it lived under sunbaths and waterfalls
loving it like i loved you
and then one day the rose petals
the rose petals began to wither

do you know they say the earth heals
and i witnessed how an eye sees tears
day by day by day
by day
as the petals peeled on theirself
as the decay rose higher than the pastel buds
till the earth and flower were indistinguishable
and that patch by my house became you

i guess its true one never forgets home
through ladders of age and life
and maybe that's why i returned to mine
grew a tree on the bright patch in the yard
shining like you were always here
and when the apples bloomed
the juice stung
the taste rang crisp and sweet

how i thought of you
searched for my flower boy
in this place that means more to me
than perhaps i ever meant to you
but that truth didn't stop my foolish teenage wishes
or the filling in my heart on a dim theater day
did you think of us?

i never threw away the dahlia you gave me
