Mama always chopped the carrots with
slow, even strokes
her knife dulled by cutting far more
than just vegetables.

I stood on the little stool by
the counter and watched,
my head barely past the smooth, wooden surface
marred by knives, berry stains, and the occasional
stray bloody nose blots.

Amile and Taye dropped their bikes on the mat
the door was open
sunlight streamed in
and wind played merrily with our hair and open books;
my brothers proudly proffered
their scrapes and bruises and
knocked over chairs in their haste to get to the table.

Papa had made that table.
He was gone now, but I could feel
his big, rough, callused hands piecing it together
board by board
sanding it clean.
I always felt those hands on my cheeks and arms when I touched
our table.

Mama set down the bowls full of rice and home-grown
vegetables
unswaddled baby Mel
"Go fetch the pepper and salt," she whispered with a wink
her cheeks were rosy, not so sallow and thin as usual.
I dashed for the merry little bears
and we all tucked in for a cozy, spring dinner all to our own
but not before our prayers,

"Pray God for the moon and the stars and the sun and the wind
and the little fir copse
and the wood violets and June bells down by the laughing stream
and the mossy, ferny logs and that Mr. Jones won't drown Thomas's kitten.
For baby Mel and Mama
Taye and Amile
Papa in Heaven
new schoolbooks and dear Teacher.
For our little garden that brought us food
and new shoelaces for Ellie
and especially that Ellie would believe in You."

If I had looked up, I would have seen the tears
in Mama's gray eyes
full of warmth
full of motherly love.
But my eyes were closed
my hands clasped
my mouth in a whimsical curve
one corner dimpled so it was a bit lopsided on one side.

I pray for new shoelaces for everyone.

hey, y'all!  been feeling this country bumpkin poem . . . it's always hard when you lose someone you love, but spring brings back the best times . . . garden dinners, open doors, playful winds, heartfelt prayers . . . lots of love!!!

P.s I adore your profile picture! Nothing beats Anne Of Green Gables! My sister is obsessed with the show, I've only watched bits and pieces of it though, I'm more of a book person! (:

This poem is so poignant! You seem to have a knack for narrative poetry. Love this so much!
    "and new shoelaces for Ellie
and especially that Ellie would believe in You." - These two lines melted my heart. <3
