'caleb' is a little-used unisex name. it's quite perfect that
its' use is majorly male,
because then, when someone makes fun of me,
i can snarkily say;
"'caleb' is also a girl's name." (the only amount of snark i allow myself in my life.)

but 'caleb' is perfect, because she is less likely to catch a male's attention, she is less likely
to be at the end of a raised voice,
because she is stronger, and
cooler and fiercer than me.

being a girl in an organization once founded for boys, it still is a
male-dominated organization,
she won't hold her tongue in the face of sexism.
she is angry when it is thrown at her.
she golds anger as a close friend and she and him together
dominate the field.

i have never been touched without consent,
(lest it was the belt as a punishment, and i learned to be quiet and follow house rules)
but i have been yelled at
and neglected
and forced into a damp corner
by a male figure when i was young.

i am a scout. i love scouting,
i refuse to let something so stupid get in my way
of being a human.
a human teaching others to carve with a knife,
wilderness survival,
environmental science.

caleb swears, and bites back. she has no posture and when camping she doesn't
brush her hair and it is never down.
she has hats and bandanas that wrap her forehead and a knife on her belt.
she went to the jamboree and she isn't afraid of dirt nor mud nor clay
infact she was the only one to kneel in the
wet grass and mud to tie clown knots to build the
ballista.

caleb is not pretty to them, caleb is strong and sometimes bossy because
she knows what she's doing
and she wasn't there to be a sweetheart, they will soon learn.
she is no southern belle she came
to learn and she came to teach.
caleb is perfect because she is everything
simpleton society doesn't want a girl to be.

I love the... idk, forceful? determined? tone of this poem (unlike the confusing/confused nature and tone of this comment lol). Seriously though, this is so good. It's like you know what you want to say, and you're going to say it. Keep being everything simpleton society doesn't want us to be. I respect you so much for that. Incredible piece!!!

    oh. my. gosh. yes.
this is so powerful and strong and i love it. and i've always admired your name - nickname? - and how down-to-earth and real it sounds. me, i've got a really girly name, and even the nickname i've started going by is pretty feminine, so... idk.
just... like your name, i guess :) hope you're well

Wow. I've heard of Caleb being used as a girl name, but I don't think I've ever met a girl with the name. I think that's pretty cool. Anyway, great piece!
