Barriers Falling

February 1, 2021

Teeming with life,
teeming with strife,
struggle, issues, hunger,
yet life.

The strong eat the weak,
The weak try hide,
they do things to fill their days,
But something is looming,
Something new.

New is dangerous.
New is strange,
new destroys their home.
That unnatural thing takes, and takes,
Takes their homes and takes their city.

There is no giving back,
there is only taking,
Life leaves after years and years,
the city turns gray.

Their home is leaving, fading away,
the urchins keep taking,
life may not find a way...
This poem is based on natural events in the Great Barrier reef in Australia. It has recently been failing because of a large influx of sea urchins eating away at the coral. That ecosystem is home to millions of creatures much, and much like our cities, is teaming with activity. If the reef fails completely the millions of species will most likely go extinct. The urchin population grew in size because of the leaking of pesticides into the water that the urchins fed on and produced young. We are responsible for this mess and we need to fix it in any way we can.
