Parentheses (A Complicated Relationship)

January 4, 2021

FREE WRITING

10
I must admit
(through a poem)
that I feel fathomless affection for a certain piece of punctuation
(parentheses.)
they slip into my writing
(without my noticing)
too bashful to come out from behind the curtain of those two lines
(those two lines, curved so elegantly...)

And I love to use them in all of my writings
(in my stories, poems, speeches, and essays)
but I ultimately part with them in my final drafts with a sentimental farewell
(much to mine and their dismay)
for they cause my writing to sound too casual
(according people other than myself, for I adore them.)

I am not a casual writer
(at least I don't want to be)
but I cherish parentheses
(I would write everything into parentheses if I could.)
So I am writing this poem in hopes to satiate my soul
(for writing parentheses into my work)
in hopes that I can now write on more pressing topics
(not parentheses)

I will never forget you
(parentheses.)
But we must go our separate ways
(unwillingly.)
Goodbye
(for now.)

                                        Yours truly
                                        (and openly and honestly,)

It is true, that I enjoy using parentheses but I usually wind up taking them out of my writing (because apparently it weakens it.) Sorry, I couldn't resist!

This piece so magnificently magical and powerful and I love the message. Your talent is beyond words and I love the meaning of this piece. It was a pleasure to read and I cannot wait to see what else you write. Thank you for sharing this.

The creativity here is so profound! And the humour (definitely the result of your deft use of parentheses ;) ) had me smiling all the way through the poem! :) I just love love love this! XD

I actually have a poem that's all in parentheses and brackets lol, so I relate. I don't think it weakens writing.
