do you think
i don’t see your brows
slope into velvety, charcoal lined
slides of disappointment
when i tell you i want to spend
my days nursing my lifelong
love affair with sentences?

“very nice.”
sometimes i think
your clay head will bob down
one day and never come back up.
your spine will be permanently bent
from the labors you slaved over
as you tried to force my restless
spirit into a respectable Latina
lady.
and it worked during the summer
when my progress was seen by
none besides you.
my rubbery lips, always flapping
as i strung together a new opinion
one that usually opposed yours,
have gone silent and dry without

their penchant for action.
i can see the crevices starting to
settle in.

i don’t like fighting with you.
i tried to find a reason why
and found solace in the most ludicrous answer in outdated horoscope pages, with Hanna Montana pop-ups from at least 2006.

i am a {Leo}
one can tell by my frizzy mane that can only be tamed by the help of a flatiron.
i’m surprised it hasn’t given out yet.
my mouth is wild, and i have found it does more harm than good when it comes to defending my math grade.

you are a [Scorpio]
calculated and shrewd
unless an Aquarius or i push you too far
off the edge.
your hard work has gone unnoticed
you had dreams to be Nike’s eyes
and bang a gavel ordering officers to send some greasy-haired crook to the slammer for good.
you would show no sympathy for the wretched whose wrists were so heavy with gold that they were prisoners of their own greed
and undying affection for the cheerful who offered their love with an empty palm.

i know i have done you more harm than good in this life starting from my birth, in which i was a little mewling child in a glass box closer to death than life

it seemed that the moment i started walking, i was headed for a different continent of my own creation.

it seems like we were meant to face off
indefinitely until the day the earth peels itself to its deathly core.
but i revel in each morning when you greet me with a kiss on the forehead,
that’s when i know i can start each day anew with you.

Re: oh, thank you so much for your comment! Your kind words mean a lot <3
This piece is wonderful! You have encompassed such a complex relationship with such poise, and I appreciate the way you ended on a more hopeful note. This is my favourite line: “ indefinitely until the day the earth peels itself to its deathly core.” What a breathtaking description!

re: oh that really sucks. i mean... idk how. it's not like they don't allow a few words and mature content that also happens to be a creative idea that came out of your mind and needs to be expressed. and it's not unordinary, what happened in your series.

wow....this is amazing! I love everything about this poem - it's so defiant and each line is beautifully crafted. Gives me The House on Mango Street vibes. Your message board could not be any truer. Also, welcome to wtw!
