american lit and me

October 29, 2020

maybe its
the pessimism
in me talking,
but how the hell
am i supposed to
analyze holden
caulfield when he uses
'goddam' in every single
waking sentence?

and jay gatsby is
a liar, by the way
with no real ambition
that shows up
until the last page?

and when abigail
williams walked
out of salem
with no blood
on her stinkin' hands?

american lit and
me are always
on the defensive end.

i don't think that'll
change for the world.

i do appreciate american lit, but i see your point... not many of the mcs are likable. ever. unless it's like anne of green gables, which i'm reading now and love! but that's canadian, i guess.
gatsby is a desperate, rich, idealizing fool, and nick is pompous and arrogant, and tom is a straight up [insert whichever horrible word you think fits him best], and i feel bad for daisy because she's a product of her generation, and also, whatever happened to tom and daisy's daughter? oh and jordan is a liar and a cheat, but that's nothing new. i admire her athleticism, though. as for holden... yeah, can't contest that. but he's way too much like people around me, except he has some degree of intelligence behind all his complaints. i guess the analysis is, 'i can't analyze them beyond how dumb they all are' ok this got kinda ranty... i'm gonna go look at the other son
