two places i long for

PROMPT: Heart Places

2
there are two places
that i find myself longing for
a place that exists in real life
and a place i want to exist in a place other than my head, but in my hometown

my high school gym, its floor bright and pale like hickory
vast lights beaming down
squeak of volleyball shoes against the wax
now covered in dust
too wide-open, too empty
chatter used to fill the corners as we pulled knee pads and ankle braces out of backpacks
lace up
the rhythmic thuds of warming up
hits going awry
peppering, why do they call it that?
laughing, smiling, wondering what she's thinking of me
does she judge me because i'm not one of them?
we on the outside know who we are
but it still feels like home.

tournaments were the best, tournaments on our home turf
arrive before sunrise, wrapped in blankets with a decaf coffee in hand
sweats and birkenstocks and hoodies and backpacks
set up the coaches' room, snag a fresh bagel
carry drinks and snacks from here to there
watch other teams trickle in
it feels like home.

the second place i long for is not a place i've been
but a place i dream of
so ideal
so aesthetic
so homey
so... writerly
a cozy coffee shop
a kitschy yet stylish cafe
steam rises from lattes with hearts and ferns drawn in their foam
buttery pastries and bitter coffee, the aromas waft in
tall windows and sunshine streams in
a whimsical logo on the glass, a chalkboard advertising specials
scones to die for and chocolate chip cookies too
delicious breakfast sandwiches and lunch too
iced, blended, hot, whatever you prefer
tea, too
smoothies, of course
artfully mismatched pillows and sofas
a real fireplace, i wish
maybe a cafe kitty?
cute wooden stools, aesthetically pleasing art and quotes in a carefully asymmetrical arrangement

i know these places exist, i've seen photos
why are they not here?

and volleyball workouts just started again
but i,
i am quarantined for two weeks.

these places, can i find them again?
A different style than I usually write. Changes the aesthetic. Idk, this was my thoughts and emotions.

ohhhhhh it's so pretty:) I feel like this as well! I wish for a place I only dream of, and I don't know it yet. I love this.

re: hi! Thanks for your comment - random comments like that always make me so happy! I love your profile too! That fourth paragraphy thing in the message to readers is so beautiful and true! I also believe that some of the most precious beauty and hope is unexpected and I love the aspiration to bring this to others! (I’m gonna write this down in my list of lifelong goals). And that idea that a constant search for gratitude, beauty and hope is a state of being is wonderful! I totally agree! So much of what we see seems to be about perspective and I definitely see from that perspective too. That sort of relates to my username, actually. I like to think that ‘you can either see the weed or the wildflower’ and there’s a kind of beauty in everything, especially the lost and overlooked things, if you only look and choose to see it. Anyways, sorry for rambling!!!! I don’t even know what I’m talking about anymore... I’m excited to read some of your work when I have some time, and to have come across your profile! Also, just curious, what’s your normal username?

I love this and I wish there was a cafe exactly how you described in my area. I am homesick for this place where I have never been.
