"Your taste in people will change when you learn to love yourself"

Growing up is hard, harder with them around,
Your "best friend" who loves to bring you down,

Hanging on every word the say, like the Gospel,
You don't see, it's not healthy nor normal,

Standing by the door, awaiting their arrival,
They're not coming, you're just in denial,

Holding the phone, make up done and ready,
Three hours, no call, no text, give up already,

Countless apologies and "I'm sorry" gifts,
Anticipation, no action, just incomplete lists,

Days, weeks, months all at a glance now,
Staring at the message with a furrowed brow,

Multiple nights without sleep, all her fault,
Only if she hadn't brought your world to a halt,

Toxic friends are not good for your mind,
But in those moments, you are blind,

It's hard, but it's time to let her go,
Tired of it, being thrown to and fro,

Close the door, throw away the key,
The time has come to let yourself be,

Turn up the music and dance away,
Learning to love yourself every day,

The more happiness and positivity you surround,
The easier it is to keep both feet on the ground.

    re: actually, my poem was about my battle with chronic depression and panic disorder. the theme behind all three topics (not being able to get up, eat, or do things i love) was that i had np motivation or energy to do so, due to the constant funk my depression leaves me in.
