The Rape Of Athena Parthenos

Doric columns
And a decorative frieze
Carved from sacred mountain marble
Purified for her
Who remains a maiden
Glittering eyes leading victors into war
Owl perched on her outstretched hand

Gradual neglect
Of her stone abode
Atop her city peaks
Has crumbled the façade
But a rape is coming
And she
The patroness of war
Is defenceless

Captors force her to her knees
And degrade her
Dressing her proud form in
Ill fitting heathen clothes
Parading her around as the mother
Of a Messiah
Instead of war

(Because the thought of a woman
In charge of such intellect and power
Was terrifying)

Her ivory skin and golden bodice
Are looted by her predators
They strip her naked
And blow cannonball punches
Into her pale frame
And tear pieces from her skin
Bleeding and screaming among ruins
Never to return her corpse
To the olive trees and sea breeze
Of her fallen empire

oh wow this is so stunning! so powerful! The tone is set so perfectly and the heartbreak of defeat is seen in every word. I love anything that has to do with ancient cities, greek/roman mythology--but this--this is so amazing!
