This is kind of depressing... maybe I need to write something happy?

flying in our descent

we trace the empty engravings of wings on our shoulder blades
& wonder why the air fails to catch us. when we were younger,
we had thought ourselves to be angels, haloed in that dewy
golden light. later, we would shed our cherubim glow
like a serpent peeling away from its worn skin, & our wings
charred under the scorching sun. who knew that light
could be so beguiling. who knew that to fall is to fly;
that to die is to be reborn from the ashes.

I think I have a thing for poetic ruinations and light.

    okay this short poetry is amazing! i love the reoccurring motif of angels, the abstract imagery and the sorrowful feel of this whole piece. and that ending!! goodness, this whole piece is just, ack gorgeous i'm running out of words lol. i'm in love with the opening, but the "when we were younger, / we had thought ourselves to be angels," had such a youthful, nostalgic feel that i can't ignore the shivers it gave me, so definitely my favorite lines but adore this whole thing, really
