Cliches/tropes to avoid when writing a “girl power” themed realistic fiction

September 2, 2020

1. So we start with the brainy or athletic female protagonist
2. who’s competing for a coveted position/award only a boy has ever won.
3. So she applies/tries out, and is obviously the only girl to do so.
4. She practices super hard, and the popular girls make fun of her.
5. Along the way, she makes friends with the school’s outcast, who’s really just misunderstood!
6. But she gets distracted
7. by something like society’s ideals
8. And starts to doubt herself.
9. But then, she finds her vaguely described inner beauty!...
10. And, BAM, wins the thingy she wanted!

Yes, preach!! Another annoying one we've all seen is the nOt LiKe oThEr gIrLs mc who's entire life purpose is being different. Like a character can be unique and strong without hating femininity and the world.

Yes. I agree. It's super frustrating when this happens! We want to see originality!
