Cliches/tropes to avoid in your fantasy novel

September 1, 2020

1. So your story starts with the sad, lonely, orphan protagonist,
2. who discovers some sort of magic ability
3. and goes to a magic school or becomes an apprentice.
4. Along the way, they meet some friends
5. and an annoying enemy who doesn’t do much for the plot.
6. But trouble brews, as the Dark Lord is back!
7. Time passes, and the protagonist realizes that they are the Chosen One!
8. The fate of the whole world rests on a teen/young adult’s shoulders.
9. The protagonist discovers the truth about their parents’ death
10. And develops a vengeance towards the Dark Lord.
11. Fast forward, and we have the epic battle/journey!...
12. But the protagonist’s mentor suddenly dies
13. And the protagonist finds their inner strength
14. Which was more important than magic all this time

True... These are the same cliches we see in quite a lot of fantasy novels... But did you just recite the whole Harry Potter series in fourteen bullet points? I applaud you :)

Hahaha the typical shounen anime. Not sure if you watch anime. Typical superhero story then?
