Books I have wrapped my heart around:
°The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
°The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
°Life of Pi by Yann Martel

she is stealing the moon, i'm not crying and there are cracks in the wall

August 16, 2020

it's three a.m. mother is jumping through june
ballads and flies away to a puppet dimension

the air is smelling sweet like hot salt flooding my
eyes and biting off my nails because the shouts
downstairs are too high-pitched. sorry, i forgot i don't cry

laughing smiling faces avoid me in my
light-drained bedroom as i
suck on a strand of hair not yet covered in bleach

it's summer mother is dancing with the
owls the howling werewolves and i am
tracing lines on the wooden coffin newly arrived

cinnamon inhabits my nostrils as i stuff my
throat with sunflowers and granola bowls emptied over
night when no one spits out nails over the milk carton

mother is an octopus conquering her sea castles
and blacking out in her own head. dropping me off
in space, mother-daughter talks and other breathless places

it's five p.m. and mother is chasing the sugar
cane fields looking for a scarecrow to spare. searching as if
the house is silent all day and her daughter isn't really there

it's three a.m. mother should you have known or should
i have stayed away?
- i don't know, they don't know, no one knows and how do you even end a poem?
- i also wanted to say: welcome new writers, hello old (old? familiar?) writers and i hope everyone has a wonderful day! (or not, it's okay if life doesn't feel like it's going too well right now; just know it will get better:)

i'm re-watching season five of doctor who with my brother and the title reminds me of it so much, lol. but anyway, this is a really fantastic piece! those opening lines, "it's three a.m. mother is jumping through june/ballads and flies away to a puppet dimension", they feel like a call to action almost, they're pull you into the piece with such urgency. this piece has such a fever dream quality to it, i absolutely love it. i mean, i've read this three times now just to admire the words. the whole second stanza is probably my favorite, but the lines "mother is an octopus conquering her sea castles/and blacking out in her own head" are just !! really excellent work here, probably one of my new favorites of your pieces!

I love this piece! Your use of repetition with speaking of the mother works marvelously here. Lovely, lovely work.
