Snowdrop in the Cold

January 14, 2021

FREE WRITING

13
Winter's breath is icy wind
Bringing constant sadness and gloom
All the flowers turn to ice
Falling to the overpowering doom

But one flower stands tall
Refusing to bend to the freezing rain
That flower is the snowdrop
Who shows joy amidst the pain

As the crocus, daffodil, delicate tulip
Wither and swoon with a moan
The snowdrop does not heed their despair
And lets out not even a groan

And when spring comes, and the showy flowers
Lay forth each arrogant bloom
The snowdrop, though quiet and plain
Has a far greater perfume

A scent of joy, a scent of smiles
Refusing to follow the crowd
And through the other gaudy blooms
The snowdrop's message is loud

In good times, tis best to show a smile
But also in bad, for then
You'll always be in the garden of joy
And be ready to face pain again

This is really inspiring and beautiful! I love the ending stanza, and the way hope is the main theme.

Re: Wow, that's really cool to have that all so close to you without having to be completely cut off from "civilization". I think I'd really like that.

Re: thanks! Loving your username! Revival is such a powerful word and idea when you really think about it. It’s what we all need.

What a peaceful and hope-filled message.
Re: thank you! I think Cold War was the context I was going for, but it’s been a while since I wrote it, so I can’t honestly remember much. XD

I love this so much! It's a perfect illustration of how even amidst the pain and cold in this broken world, there is beauty and joy and life. Beautiful.

first off, love the symbolism in this and how you ended the poem with a clear statement of the theme. And I really liked how you constantly contrasted the snowdrop with other flowers to show how different it was.
    Lovely rhyming as well!! :D

Submitted a peer review for this piece finally! I promised a review in return for the very insightful one you gave me of my piece "There is a place". This piece is so great and I enjoyed writing the review :)
