Black Lives Matter
The most moving part of this piece was the deeply personal story you experienced so early in childhood. I was very impacted by the twist in the middle of the story when the CBGs were only given to white students as a way to demonstrate racial inequality. I thought the way you were able to dissect all of the different emotions you felt from the perspective of a young child was very effective in helping the audience resonate with the concepts of discrimination in a simple but powerful way, and feel called to change!
This story really reminded me of the importance of early education when it comes to breaking racial stereotypes and encouraging our future generations to display unbiased, considerate behaviour! It was incredible that you were able to recognize your biases and behaviours at such an early age - and the fact that this racism is still on-going, despite the claims of your teacher and education system. It reminds us that we have to build societies where children are encouraged to understand these injustices early on. I think you could even have this idea as the basis for your call to action - to call upon parents and teachers to introduce these ideas at an early age.
I was very touched by this piece and the experience you shared! Thank you so much for your bravery in admitting your own privilege and biases. :)
