This is for my friend who said, "well we're not racist," as if that was enough. This is for my relatives who just wish for a "peaceful protest" and for my church pastor who says that justice isn't achieved through violence, as if the crucifixion of Jesus was gentle and protective of white fragility. And this is for me, it's too easy for me to be comfortable.

Home should be a sacred place
But the innocent face bloodied
On asphalt
And we know who's at fault
Yet we choose to kick again and again into bruised ribs
That's the only comfort we know. A language written in blood
A church built out of violence and we love to worship
Pigs fight to establish dominance
Chickens tear each other to shreds at the scent of blood
We use tests, tricks and badges and laws that ensnare
We see something whole and we just need to tear
Rip apart lives like they're Christmas paper
And then walk away letting their screams taper off into sobbing
Then act like they're robbing us
Of a peaceful society
