PROMPT: The Unseen

it perches on my shoulder, hanging
in the recesses of my mind

the silence swells, pounding
arrhythmia in my eardrums
and i fear
    oh, how i fear
that one night it will spread
its gnarled fingers clutching
my limp heart with daggers of ice
razor-sharp nails piercing into delicate fruit
torn remains dripping on the ground

for when the sun fizzles out,
flat like diet coke
and the cicadas croak
and the shadows dance like puppets on a string

the silence will grab hold
of me
and rip the earbuds
tear the bandaid off with shaky fingertips, adhesive clinging to my raw skin
so all i can hear
are the voices screaming in my head
Sometimes, it's easy to smile and mute the voices in your head. But when the earth pulls on her blanket of nighttime, and when the silence clangs like crashing waves, who is there to protect you from yourself?

i found this maddeningly mystical. your piece draws the reader in, quietly, easily until the last stanza catches you off guard. and the footnotes were arguably the best bit.
