Hi I noticed that I forgot to capitalise the 'B' in 'Black' so here's the updated version and a reminder that we always capitalise the 'B' when referring to Black People, Black History, etc. x

To the statue of edward colston

July 1, 2020

To the statue of edward colston,

I hope the fish of Bristol waters where your slaveships were docked
Nibble at you until you crumble into sand.
I hope sharpie-penned declarations of 'slaver' 'racist' 'murderer'
Cling to you and not come off for hundreds of years.
I hope clayton, cass, milligan and churchill join you in the Thames.
Shipwrecked stone forms of evildoers coagulate in the water, their delusions of grandeur drowned and dead.
Up in marble and wrought in gold rises Mary Seacole, Nelson Mandela, John Agard, Benjamin Zephaniah, the Windrush Generation, the victims of Grenfell, and one day Akala.
And Britain builds statues for the people they enslaved.
Though it will never, ever be enough.
And Britain teaches Black history in schools.
Not just one month a year.
Every month.
Of every year.
And the British Museum returns what it stole from those the Empire colonised.
And families of slave owners repay the compensation payments they received.
And Boris Johnson.
And Dominic Cummings.
And Priti Patel.
And Nigel Farage.
And the Labour Party.
And the NHS.
AND THE POLICE. ESPECIALLY THE POLICE.
And your mum.
And your dad.
And your bigoted relatives.
And you.
And me.
And Britain learns what its history really is.

I know they pulled you back out of the water, but I can't wait for the day they chuck you back in.

Sincerely.
