childhood reminiscence

June 14, 2020

flap, flap. my grandpa’s rubber sandals
snap at the linoleum tiles

the way my grandma does at my father. sometimes
i see them, hunching over untouched baozi:

father’s head bowed slightly, like a dandelion
to the wind, as if a reprimanded child once more.

mama sits at the table with bills for company,
crisp white sheets with glaring bold numbers that
teeter higher than her creased forehead.

grandma has her way of apologizing, papa tells me.
in the morning i’ll come down to a plate of fresh baozi

steam still curling from milky white dough, (the sting of chives
assaulting my senses,) and that’s how i know they’ve made up.

auntie comes by sometimes, all legs and no curves (eat more
says grandma). she’s like a whirlwind, comes and goes

as soon as i blink. she brings me lipgloss and peach gummies that
leave my tongue stinging and jaw sore: tai duo tong la.

(too much sugar.) mama purses her lips when she talks
about auntie — too rich for her own good, i hear her say.

grandpa dips horsehairs in black ink and swirls poetry on
musty parchment, each character a jumble of lines i do not know —

i can only wonder at what it means. grandma says
he’s wasting his time on poetry, that only

the richest men in the world have time to create.
i know, one day, i will be one of them.
a collection of jumbled memories from my second home in guangzhou, china. it's become a blur now and i wanted something to help me remember!

welcome to wtw! if you need anything at all, don’t be afraid to ask me. just drop a comment and i’ll try my best to help you. pro tip number one: when replying to someone else’s comment on your piece, you go to one of their pieces and comment “replying: *whatever you wanna say*”. that way, they get the notification! like i’m about to do
replying: thank you for reading!! glad to hear that my imagery and diction weren’t as convoluted as i’d thought

This is beautiful, in such a way that children see the world- eyes wide and hearing everything. Great job and I can't wait to see what else you write!

I really love the nostalgia in this, when you talk about family here. and the addition of Chinese phrases in between.
great to have yet another talented writer on here, so welcome to WtW!
