we measure failure
in the length of a letter    
a, b, 
cede the paper to the palm, post it 
pens scratching
at midnight
house after house in the
black ink, graphite
housing-estates
smudges the sleep under their 
eyes
late
the numbers are sharp to 
pull apart, and during the exam
you can see their cut
fingers, you can see their                                    
cut
car drives 
home, sometimes 
the parents sob as children cry
in backseats,
i
walk through a door
walk through a son and a mother
embraced
and myself, through a door,
made of paper
there their dreams are precise
limitless
the shapes of these letters
they end out of sight.
failing math and fearing it will ruin my future be like ^
