My Day Is Ruined

Wake up,
Drink coffee,
Get dressed
And leave before eight.

Backpack-purse and book
Pencil tucked behind my ear
Take one last, searching look
Nothing else I need is here.

At work, say hi,
Look down at my wrist.
And clench fist as I realize
I forgot.

My watch isn't there,
It's still at home.
And most don't really care
But I feel like I'm missing a bone.

Call Mom,
Ask her to bring it,
When she comes for the kids,
So I will feel complete.

Climb in the car and ask
And hold back unexplainable tears
Behind a cool mask
Because she forgot and face my fears

Now the day is ruined,
From beginning to end,
All because I can't feel complete
Without a watch
