Message to Readers

All the quotes in this poem are all genuine things people have said to either me or my friends or fellow LGBTQ+ people I know. I want to continue to add to this poem to address the hate and stereotypes different identities face. So if you’re LGBTQ+ and you have any real quotes or stereotypes about your identity then comment down below, if you want to. Let’s debunk the ignorance and stereotypes.

We are here, yeah we’re Queer.

Don’t tell me I’m too loud!

Don’t tell me not to be proud!

Not here, not in front of my kids, they don’t need to know about this.

Know what?
That two girls can kiss
That sometimes love is genderless.

Don’t tell me I’m reducing myself to my sexuality because I care about this!

You mention gay characters a lot, maybe you should not

What? I should stop?
stop caring about representation maybe you forgot, but you get a relatable romance, all most every time you go to the cinema,
I get what? Well I can tell you that on the big screen, I do not
get a girl meets girl romcom.

Just stop!
Don’t pretend as if
You care about this,

Yeah, I’ve plenty of gay mates.

And that’s all great till,
I tell you I’m gay and it’s

ew, you like girls do you like, have a crush on me.

Honestly, Is it that hard for you to see,
I like girls who like girls too,
i’m not about to run after you.

you like girls? that’s hot.

Just stop!
do you think I like girls cuz
I want your attention
did you hear me correct?
or did I forget to mention?
I’m gay
that should be all I have to say.

you say they/them pronouns

Too confusing

yet you’ll take time to make,
nicknames for your mates
could you be more fake!
All I can say is if you’ve time for that then you’ve time to make the decision to use someone’s correct pronouns.

Don’t use someone’s dead name
if they ask you not too,
just use the name they want you too,
it’s not that hard to do.

If someone tells you they’re bi don’t assume they’ll cheat,
sexuality doesn’t define your integrity.

If your part of the community then you should stand in solidarity, not push someone out because you chose to see bisexuality as a phase of popularity,
it’s a real identity!

It’s a sin

You cry,
love thy neighbour suddenly goes out the window,
and you’ll happily throw out
your kin
For a book written over 3000
years ago
Which you paraphrase
as it’s convenient for you to preach your hate.

I don’t mind it but do you have to shove it in my face?

I’m sorry that me fighting hate
accounts to shoving it in your face.

we need a straight pride!

Could you be more ignorant
if you tried?
did you face persecution
based on your sexuality or gender identification?
did you have to wait years for the right to marry your bride?

So don’t tell me I’m too loud!

Don’t tell me not to be proud!

We are here! yeah, we are Queer! And let’s be clear we’re proud AF!

Ellen J, thank you, yeah I really wanted to make sure my poem was inclusive to the whole community and address as many issues, as I could. Sorry you’ve had to listen to your family and friends say some annoying things it’s got to have been frustrating, (trust me I know the annoyance of ignorant comments) but I’m glad my responses resonated with you. Also Thank you!

Say it loud and say it proud! I love how you write responses to every homophobic thing that happens to people who are LGBTQ. I can relate to this. I’m bisexual myself and I’ve sat at the dinner table listening to family and friends say some very annoying things about homosexuality being shoved in their faces. Your responses are everything I’d say myself and I love how you make them rhyme to add a wittiness to your words. Fantastic poem that I think loads of people should see!

This piece is so strong! Say it louder because there are still people who think love is a sin, say it louder to the people who love dividing love.......

I'm not gay or anything but I know what you mean that others can't control your feelings.
