Since lockdown's going to be extended for another 6 months at least, and I'm already bored of the prompts, the contest is running again.
Here are the prompts:
prompt 1
In one of my favourite books, Stargirl, the main character, Stargirl Caraway, delivers an unexpected speech with no central theme, in an oration competition which ends up winning first prize. For this prompt, you will write something similar: you will jump from one stream of thought to another throughout the piece, never dwelling on one topic for long.
The piece has to be about you—one moment you can be telling me about your pet dog, the next about a peculiar cloud formation you saw the other day, and the next about something totally unrelated. Go into as much depth as you want, and/or make me feel like you’ve picked out floating ideas from midair and squashed them together to form your piece. The intention of your piece is to ramble-- but not haphazardly.
Word count: at least 500 words, but your entry can be as long as you want.
prompt 2
As you might know, I am a sucker for scientific poems. For this prompt, write exactly that—you can talk about evolution, about static, the chemical composition of soil—anything you want, really, as long as it can be categorised into science. I don't want you opening a random page in your science textbook and converting it to poetic verse, rather go in-depth about a topic that interests you.
Understand that the poem has to be scientific. Explanatory. You can describe love in terms of hormonal release if you want, but please don't compare it to the expanding universe.
Word count: 50-300.
prompt 3
Write about detachment. You can write about the feeling of it, its cause, its aftermath-- anything you wish, really. This is a prompt that can be interpreted in any way you want, as long as it forms the central, or at least, a main theme. Just mentioning the word once in the piece won't do. You don't have to make the piece serious, though-- it can be made fun and light-hearted as long as it pertains to the topic
Word count: At least 15 words, no maximum limit.
prompt 4
Write a piece inspired by your favourite lyrics. Again, this prompt is open to interpretation as you may wish, but it's alright if you include the lyrics in your story and don't base your piece off of it. Make your piece personal, or make it fictional, tell me what the lyrics mean to you. (Nobody asked but my favourite words from a song are this: Just for tonight, look inside and spark that memory of you // strong enough to get it wrong in front of all these people).
Word count: 50-500 words.
prompt 5
Write about your pet peeve. Make me feel disgusted/angry/irritated on your behalf. Describe your emotions when it happens. For example, I cannot stand bad table manners, but my grandfather is the noisiest eater I know, so I'd write about those little details that irk me. The objective is to make me feel your feelings when you go through it, so I'll judge this prompt by how hard it was for me to read your pieces.
Word count: At least 150 words, no maximum limit.
rules
· Each prompt (except #2) may be written in whatever style you choose.
· Although the word limit is specified, a little over or under if fine if you feel that’s what you need to submit the best piece.

· IMPORTANT: each piece should be tagged #126, and be linked in the comments.
· You can submit pieces you’ve already written as long as they fit the prompt.
· If I feel like your piece doesn't fit the prompt correctly, it will be disqualified.
· Mention which prompt you're writing for in the footnotes of your piece.
· I will not accept revised versions if I've already acknowledged your piece.
