holocene extinction

January 4, 2020

it's getting hard to sleep now,
knowing that
halfway across the world
is a country aflame,
500 million animals dead,
and a government
with no way of stopping it.

it's a lot to think about-
the imprisoned Muslims,
North Korea's bombs,
and the growing possibility
of a third world war.

it makes my problems seem so small.

i don't know how to help them because
sometimes, spreading the word isn't enough
but everyone is dying
and we need action
but I feel so insignificant,
in this big world
with so many problems.

I can't help but wonder,
was the world like this
for my parents
when they were young?

did they ever feel scared
to step foot inside their own school
or doubt the very person
who controlled their country?

dear God, or anyone out there,
will this world keep getting worse?
i know you'll be watching us
spiral into chaos until
there is nothing anymore
and we have caused
our own extinction.

kinda scared ngl.

but truthfully, the main reason I published this piece was to ask if anyone knows any way that the Australian fires can be helped.  is there a place to donate? what is their government doing right now to stop the fires?  I send my prayers to those in Australia who are experiencing this disaster and its effects.  i cannot even begin to imagine what is happening there.  stay safe everyone <3

Wow this struck the core of my soul.
The world is a bit of a scary place, and honestly this piece put to words what I have been feeling for a while now.
I would have to agree with CreativeAngel that donations/spreading word are probably the best way we can help those in Australia... man I wish I could do more though.

Something I have realized is that for all the darkness in the world there is an equal amount of light trying to tip the scale and win the ongoing battle between good and evil, and we individuals truly do play a huge part in it. We must decide in ourselves which side we will turn too, which side we will strengthen. We can tip the balance if only we first believe in ourselves.

Anyways, this is a great piece packed with so much emotion and truth, good job. :)

Donations are always helpful. Just by writing this you are spreading the word and helping :)

This is such a beautiful way to put it and it’s - sadly - completely relatable. Thank you for writing such an important piece

I know, I'm scared, too. It seems like there's always some horrific natural disaster going on, but most governments are doing pathetically little to stop them. I love the way you wrote this. :)
