when humanity was young

December 15, 2019

PROMPT: One Home

8
when humanity was young,
we looked around us
at the earth
and saw beauty.

the ocean hummed a hopeful tune
and we heard it and sang along.
the wind whispered secrets into our ears
and we treasured them in our hearts.

we found our souls
in the ancient dances of the trees
and in the mud that caked our feet.

when humanity was young,
our blood ran with the rivers:
pure, and joyful and free
and we painted the earth
with stories.

now we are older.
they say we are wiser.
but i look around at humanity,
and i see ignorance.

our eyes no longer sparkle
with the knowledge of the earth's beauty.
instead we look around at the earth
and we see nothing,
not knowing that our vision is clouded
by the smoke of prideful and greedy minds.

the ocean still calls to us
but its melody is lost
beneath the deafening blares
of foghorns and lies.

and the wind still brings us its stories
but the tales it tells
are too heartbreaking for us to bear.
so we gladly tune out the truth
and instead choose to live
in pretend disregard.

centuries of painted stories are lost,
buried beneath skyscrapers
and billowing factories
and no matter how deep we dig
we will never be able to recover them.

our blood still runs with the rivers,
dark and polluted and sick
but we choose to ignore this
and bury our guilt
because we can't accept that we hurt
because the earth hurts.

and so, i mourn for what was lost
and all i wish is to go back
when people danced with the trees
and sang with the ocean
and painted beautiful stories.

take me back to when humanity was young.

    This is Amazing!!!
I completely and wholeheartedly agree with this whole piece. I want more than anything for humanity to be young again, to see the beauty that surrounds us and to be connected to the earth again.
You portrayed this truth so perfectly, great job!!

My favorite line: "so we gladly tune out the truth/and instead choose to live/in pretend disregard. " That hits the nail on the head. I've met too many people who either don't care about climate change or only pretend to care. I think the structure is nice as well - beautiful work.
