is it normal to be human i ask
one night
sleep prying warmly at my lips

the answer is no
and i wonder who said it
like some kind of

and a fist milky with
sweat reaches

for the bible on my nightstand
and i am fearful of the things
i do not know

then i think of what
came first

the stars peeling off of my ceiling
in elderly loops
terrible adhesive

and the cough assailing
my chest
in rough hacking fragments

then fingers trace the bends of my face
and the circle in my nose
and the golden freckles in my brow

and quietly i realize that the hands
are not
my own

and beside me
the bible whispers silently
on my nightstand

This feels very otherworldly and ethereal. It has a sort of tiredness to it that i love. The imagery is so beautiful, i cannottt <3
Also, is the line, “the stars peeling off of my ceiling/in elderly loops/terrible adhesive” referring to those glow-in-the-dark ceiling stars? Because i love those so much!

Such a beautiful piece. Very intricate, carefully picked vocabularly which made it very interesting to read.
