FREE WRITING

56
Hello again.

I have been thinking about my activity on this site since my last post about leaving. A month of holidays has given me the time and environment to think and write. I thought that I wasn't able to express things that I wanted to here but I realised that I was wrong. This place has been my home for writing for so long and I am sure I won't be able to find another place more comforting and more filled with opportunities. When I tried to leave, I was going through a phase and now that it's over, it's difficult to remember what it was all about but I want to try again. I'm getting old. Which means that I'm going to be 17 soon and I only have until my 19th birthday to be a young writer eligible for competitions on this site again (even though I bet I'd still feel young at 19 haha). I want to write as much as I can and read as many works as my time can provide chance. I still have so much to learn from this entire community of young writers and I still want to improve my reviewing skills (and for those who asked me to review their work the last time, I'll make sure I finish them slowly now that I'm back).

I know it seems fickle. I always thought I was sure of what I wanted but it seems like I've changed my mind. Although it's barely been that long, I hope that I'm still welcome here. \(UwU)/

Therefore, I want to host a small contest to read your works:)))!!

Here are the prompts:

1. #MagicalRealism: Magical Realism is a style of writing in literature where writers paint a realistic view of the modern world while adding magical elements to it. To put it simply, supernatural elements are described so naturally as if they were mundane to the characters in the story. As an example, this writing style is extremely prominent in the famous One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. Ice need not melt in a desert as it should and who’s to say fish must swim in ponds?
  • Bring forth your creativity and put your imagination to the test. Make the outlandish ordinary and the peculiar prevailing! For this prompt, only fiction in the form of prose or novel excerpts should be submitted to capture the essence of this genre in its truest form.
  • Tip: Remember to keep your setting modern! Though a subcategory of fantasy, magical realism takes place in ordinary worlds much like our own with only elements of magic.
  • Word limit: 450-1500

2. #ArtOfCompression: As the prompt suggests, this piece will be a breeze to complete and a pain to edit. When Edgar Allan Poe wrote his short stories, his rule was to ensure that every word had its purpose; that no word was left without fulfilling meaning to the story. Therefore, for this prompt, I’m going to have to be a little more specific.
  • If you want to write poetry: please submit a haiku! Its composition is fixed and for those who are not too familiar with it, it comprises 3 lines of syllables 5, 7, 5. Feel free to check out my haiku, Mimosa Pudica, if you want a clearer idea.
  • However, if it suits you better, you may also submit a free-verse poem consisting of a single stanza of 4 lines.
  • If you want to write prose or short story: please submit a piece of no more than 350 words!
  • Tip: Make sure every word serves its purpose and edit your piece well!

3. #SecondPerspective: We've all heard of unreliable narrators but what about unreliable bystanders? For this prompt, write in first-person but in the perspective of a character who acts more as a witness of the protagonist's actions. Much like Nick in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald who tells the story from his observations and interactions with the protagonist, Jay Gatsby, you will also be writing from someone else's perspective. This type of perspective can be as unreliable as you deem fit since he or she would only reveal the story from his or her point of view.
  • Fiction in the form of prose or novel excerpts should be submitted for this prompt.
  • Tip: Don't forget to write in first-person! Try making some of your character's thoughts a little exaggerated. Such perspectives are all about the biases withheld by characters.
  • Word limit: 450-1500

You are free to submit as many pieces as you like but only 1 for each prompt please!

There will be three winners for each prompt.
1st: a follow, 3 reviews of your choice, 3 likes (I'll choose), a well-deserved shout-out in my next piece.
2nd: a follow, 2 reviews of your choice, 2 likes (I'll choose).
3rd: a follow, a review of your choice, a like (I'll choose).

Honourable mention(s) (hopefully, there will be sufficient participants for this): 3 comments and 3 likes that I will choose.

I really (really) hope I'll receive your support since it's my first hosted contest and because I came back after thinking for so long. I hope that many of y'all will participate in this contest so I'm placing a due date that is pretty far away for ample time:))

Submission date: 15th February 2020 in your country, 11.59 p.m.

Please like this piece if you intend to participate and send a link of your piece in the comments section down below! Don't forget to include the hashtag of each prompt in the title of your piece as well. I look forward to reading your entries!!

This is my entry for #ArtOfCompression! https://bit.ly/2UOW8pL
It shows up like 5 lines instead of 4 bc of WTW's formatting, unfortunately. I totally understand if it won't be eligible bc of that. If you need me to make edits to accommodate the formatting I can!

Thank you so much for your comment. I think healthy competition is fine. But in my country competition is a little more i feel. Like few parents always compare their kids with their neighbors. ( Like even in carrer options ) so i wanted to reflect that. Btw I just published this piece of debate and I was againt the motion. Thanks again
