The Sounds of Living in This World (As Recounted By A Depressed Teen)

November 21, 2019

PROMPT: Microphone

2
the sounds of my heart:
that steady jump
jump
jump
forces me alive
echoes off the walls
of this machine.

the mechanisms grind and clank
stomp and groan
sob and moan
they echo off the walls
of this machine.

the abyss, the labyrinth, the maze,
 of this machine
it jumps, it taunts
it dances, it mocks
the sounds forever echo
and follow
and scamper
through the halls
of this machine.

Their playfulness and
    glassy giggles and
        joyous jumps,
incur those teeth and claws
of this machine.

Spurred on by the sound of happiness
the sound of a smile,
a wave hello,
a kindness,
the sound of a life:
that beating heart.
But then-
teeth gnashing
claws scraping
metal screeching
the hum of melancholy
the drum roll of morbidity
as life is captured, snuffed
by this machine.

The unexpected absence of sound
a shocked pause
ringing silence
in this machine.

And so the jangle
and cackle
and droning hum
continues on
with new jumps
to feed this machine.

The torturous misery you describe in this poem seems to really resound with how many teens feel. Your imagery and description are fantastic; I can feel the irritation and unhappiness that you describe.
