The unusual protagonist. He doesn't seem to react in ways I would expect a person to - he doesn't respond to injuries much, he eats a lot... and for someone who is lost for months, he still seems to take pleasure in things like canoeing and scenery when a normal person might be too exhausted from just surviving. He is intriguing.
We need to know more about his inner thoughts. I would like to know why he was hunting alone with no way to be found, whether he is scared at all or sad about his family. Does he think people are searching for him? Is there a reason he seems so contented with being completely alone in the wilderness?
I want to know what lead to the hunting trip and whether he was alone or if other members of his hunting party got separated. I want to learn more about the hardships of hiking in the forests and the weather and temperature and less about the food he finds. Or maybe more details like the kind of berries or the taste of the raw fish...
I think maybe some place like Alaska where there are so many miles of lands without people.
I think there could be some really interesting angles about the main character, because he doesn't come across as completely human or normal. I also think there needs to be a direction the story is headed as right now it kind of seems like a complete short story that ends in his rescue.
I would rewrite with it written more in his own voice so we understand him better. I think also add in little moments of back story - maybe the flickering fire reminds him of Christmas morning back home with his wife and child and makes him feel like crying because he may never see them again. If he has a broken leg or a gashed arm, either make it a feature that he doesn't feel the pain or has super human healing, or else write about the agonizing pain and remember to reference the injury as the story goes on.
Overall I liked it, but I was left wanting to know more about the hunter, because I don't know even his name.
