"To see the world, things dangerous to come, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life."

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Message to Readers

i’m curious to know what emotions this elicits and how it feels to read. i haven’t tried doing it as spoken word yet but i may rework again for that purpose. what does it make you reflect on? what do you think the themes are?

breaking news: big business buys out the airwaves; dj chokes to death in third-floor flat

June 8, 2020

televisions talk too much.

so I switch mine off instead and repose into silence
in a blue world - blue sheets, blue walls, blue lights -
let the mattress muffle the engines outside
and the neighbours shuffling in the threshold
of house and home,
snorting on cigarettes,
blunt beaks of ember in the soot-light.

televisions talk too much
so I’m left with fifty radios instead,
satellites colliding and aligning to the batons of
steel-suited conductors in the opera above.
fifty smacks of sound shoot into the nebulae
and I’m lying in the blue room,
waiting for the day when they all sink back down.

televisions talk too much
and the radios won’t help,
so now it’s this:
a seething star steaming scrap smoke across the skyline,
a storyboard of corpse-clouds and notes sketched into the thin line of the horizon,
artists (brutalised)
hack up all of their voices, a feckless fury of fizzling arrows—
those rockets are all just
jack-o-lanterns in denial,
hammered under Heaven, extinguished on Earth,
seeking me out in my blue room,
extending sagging hands
to me,
flat-lining in the bed-springs,
head drowning in white noise between two pillows

waiting for the beep where one scream ends and the next begins,
for the stutter on the heart monitor,
for the static on the television screen,
for the right song to finally play.

my television talks too much.
so I deck its glass teeth back into its throat and tell it to
shut up.
originally published in september ‘19 under the title ‘jack-o-lanterns’, inspired by feeling bored of tv in a blue room watching the sky outside turn pink. recently updated with some newer themes and influences and now re-publishing. - m.b.

this is so ethereal and so incredibly vivid, the way you describe things and your writing style is just !! it makes me think of the blue hour and going into the city, how there's this sort of anxious, melancholy feeling when you're walking down the streets at a late hour.

woah. this is beautiful. as for emotions... whew there are some hefty ones... the sense of chaos and the world moving too fast to catch up with, the feeling of panic, almost, or anxiety... yeah, i really love this piece!!!
