grieving thoughts of a broken statue

there would be no sun to break the storm clouds
for twilight prefers to bathe herself in cold milk
rather than the golden honey that dawn so enjoys
instead the only light is from a harsh mistress and her attendants
flaring the night sky into an incomplete darkness

and lost loved ones and mourning ghosts plague me
and tragedies and trials weigh upon my shoulders
i wonder if this is how atlas felt
unable to stand under the burden and choosing instead to
fall to his knees and wait for the relief that would never come

because why would my burden be alleviated tonight
and why should it be? maybe it is acceptable that i am miserable
for i am here and she is not
(yet she is and you can't see her empty and listless eyes gazing at you
and you don't hear her voice in your head asking why you're here and she's not)

and you don't see the car headlights flaring in your memories
and the question of why you are unscathed and she is buried beneath a gravestone goes unasked
because there was no explanation they could give
so the rain just keeps dripping off my face and i can't care that i could catch a cold
as the wedding ring twirls between my fingers realization steps out of a foggy mind

my chest shouldn't be heaving like it is now
and i wonder why my arms are wrapped around myself like they're trying to keep me together
(a broken statue is all i am now for i am cold and unfeeling though my features say 'i'm alive')
and these sounds coming from between my lips are oddly ragged

and i can't help but ponder on the fact that the rain on my face tastes salty

Very well written! You have a wonderful imagination. The last line " the rain on my face tastes salty" is just great.

How beautifully picturesque! I love the symbolism scattered throughout here. That causes this piece to be relatable to pretty much anyone who has suffered a loss.
    Keep writing! God bless!
