But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?

Two Marbled Stones

June 19, 2019

PROMPT: Micro Memoir

The little black cat is my friend.

Her cloudy eyes are gentle in the night; two marbled stones that smile dim (but bright). She has a smile, the little cat, a smile that whispers upon the edge of her cheeks, just like the whiskers that she brushes with a scarred paw. Is it the subtle nod of her head through the fog that sends me spiralling into a flux of dreams? Or is it the pitter patter of almost-silent footsteps as she pads across my lawn?

It think it is neither the former nor the latter - it is her whirring breaths that beat in time to mine, each one a syncopated note in the music of our lives.

I know no loneliness in this bleak but paint-streaked world, where a little black cat slinks beyond the ferns and into my arms.
