“Just snap out of it, it’s all in your head.” Those were the last words she heard before she took the blade and ran it vertically down her arm. Blood poured heavily down to her fingertips and she became queasy. She couldn’t stop looking down at the mark that she had created on her own skin. Senseless and numb, her nausea caught up to her and she was out like a light.
“Just snap out of it, it’s all in your head.” Those were the last words she heard before her elder took the belt and created purple and black wounds all over her skin.
“Just snap out of it, it’s all in your head.” Those were the last words she heard before she took the greatest hit ever from her cigarette.
“Just snap out of it, it’s all in your head.” Those were the last words she heard before she put the handful of pills down her own throat.
Society needs to understand that people don’t just die from suicide, they die from a deep pain within their hearts, sadness... depression. People don’t just live off of happiness, they live off of contentment, a sense of rightness, morality, faith. Why is it that mental illnesses aren’t considered to be real? Why can’t I stay home from school because I just don’t feel up to it? Do I have to have the flu or a sore throat to get out of school? Can you help me, please? I don’t understand. We live in a world full of sadness and bland.
Society teaches us that mental illnesses aren’t real, that they don’t matter. Then they act surprised at the 60% increase rate of people committing suicide. They act surprised at the fact that ‘Suicide’ is the 10th major leading cause of a person’s death. Even homicide, murder, is ranked at 17.
Now here’s the deal; Mental illnesses are just as serious as physical illnesses. It’s a disorder, not at all a decision. Mental illnesses are recognized, but not appropriately. 2 out of 3 people living with mental illness suffer in silence. We need to reach out to people. We need to help each other. We need to support each other. One life. One precious being. One heart. One body. Help me, help me change the world.
