the wanderer has no home

April 29, 2019

walking on a dusty road
the town behind me
horizon ahead
sea beside

the salty breeze
caressed my face
and the sun shone
so softly

i met a traveler with a
walking-stick in hand
tattered cloak billowing and
ash-brown locks falling into his eyes

where are you from
he asked and i replied
i am from yoru
the town twenty miles behind me

i am going on a trip
and will not return
for a long time but
it is my home and i will return

what about you
i returned
evidently you have traveled
longer than i

for your cloak is worn and
lines are sun-etched
into your face
where do you live

he smiled
almost wistfully but
who was i to know
and with a small shrug

he said
i am a wanderer
i have visited places
you will never see

i have walked the deserts
and traversed blue oceans
i have lived everywhere
but have a home nowhere

i have many friends
i have yet to make
and many more
i will never see again

but i am a wanderer
and i have no home
to return to
no place to love

i possess only the
clothes on my back and the
necessities and mementos
within my knapsack

and he told me he felt
free as a bird
but i looked in his eyes and saw
a slight shade of pain

he knew i knew
and he smiled again
but this time tinged with sadness
and bade me farewell

for we knew we would never
meet again
for he was a wanderer
and i had a home to return to

and a parting song was in his throat
as the breeze tousled his ash-brown hair
and he walked his weary way
to towns i would never see

he sang of meadows and
of thunderstorms and

but what i remember
were the last verses
of that mournful song

i have met many people
over these long
long years
but for all the friends i ever made
i never saw them once again
never in my happiest dreams
could i ever see them once again

and though i have passed
through forest and
over mountain
by river and by brook
i never had any place to call my own
never in my happiest dreams
could i ever have a place to call my own

and so i smiled and
waved goodbye
all those years ago
on that dusty road

but deep inside
i felt like crying
for the weary wanderer
doomed to roam

Ooh ... makes me tingle all over with sadness ... sometimes I feel like a wanderer ... but I know God will always call me back home again. =)
