Awake at Night

March 16, 2019

The house is so silent,
everyone is asleep.
So silent...
like that last second before dawn,
when the world waits on its tiptoes
for an explanation why the night was so long.

The silence is like a demon
that haunts me as I lie in my bed.
The voices of futures so far and wide
forms a rabbit hole so I can hide.
But that dark presence made darker
by the fact that I am the only one awake
follows me into the hole that every night I create.

I smile as I dream up pictures to plaster before my eyes like blinders
so the scary, imaginary man outside my window in the dark
can't peak through into my head.
Those pictures, ah so pure and sweet,
have a picturesque feel to them.
I can't help but wonder if it's less my fancies and more my insecurities and dread.

Can't they be real? I tell myself. Can't my dreams come true?
These pictures of my dreams haunt me more than the man behind the drape.
But soon they disappear as I glide off to a restless, hurried sleep.
