off the sides of
buildings

running in rivulets
off my umbrella

soaking
that homeless
man
sleeping on the
bench
with a newspaper
over his head

i can't feel the chill
i have a heavy coat
and the freezing rain
hasn't touched my
face
and the biting wind
hasn't seeped through my
scarf

but he is shivering
trembling like a leaf
about to break free
of its branch

in an instant
it could give up
let go
suddenly absent.

would anybody
notice?
a leaf among thousands
would anybody realize
that it's already
gone?

I wholeheartedly agree with Paperbird. There's so much and so little going on in this piece and your words describe it perfectly. You beautifully managed to capture a real world problem and turn it into something else entirely. I've read it over and over again and I still can't comprehend how you did this. I love it sooo much and now have a new goal to work towards to. Thank you so much for that!!! Just to reiterate this one more time: beautifully done. Hearts and stars :D

i feel like it's unfair that the longest comment on this piece has only eleven words. i mean, this is fantastic. the visual use of "dripping". the spacing of stanza 4. the concept of privilege and priority, all tied together with a hooking title and a chilling rhetorical question. the metaphor to leaves is wonderful as well. had to read this one several times. masterful, as always. the meaning could not have been more brutally delivered, in a beautiful sort of way.
