lie on my epitaph when the dirt gets in my eyes

February 24, 2019

they say i'm not the center of the earth,
maybe i'll dig there with a frozen spoon
just to prove them all wrong.
when the dirt gets in my eyes and
leaks through to my head,
and i start to fall away,
i'll ask you to lie on my epitaph and say i made it:
it's hard to be optimistic when every voice i've ever heard
is cataloged somewhere behind my ears
and i drive myself up the walls and claw the roof down
twisting around to see who's calling me.
one day i'll wake up
wearing a crown of fingerprints round my neck,
and i'll know i'm a ghost but i don't think i'll care.
if my life were a book,
i could write essays on the symbolization,
and i'd chart it out like psychological astronomy---
you, for instance, would align somewhere between ego
and coping mechanisms.

sometimes i think i'm just the same old primitive ape
wearing layers of societal coaching over my skin,
but that's alright; i'll forget it in the morning.
I know this seems like kind of a weird poem. It is. I don't really have an explanation for it. It was inspired by a line from Green Day's Jesus of Suburbia: "the center of the earth is the end of the world." Please, if you're going to like, comment as well! Feedback is much more useful than a gold star!

I'm amazed at the talent in this piece, and I hope the review (that should be coming through) is helpful!

I love this so much! The writting evokes beautiful imagry. It's aesthetically pleasing in a "late at night thinking to ones self in a depressing manner" way.

Every line in this is masterfully written, and "wearing a crown of fingerprints around my neck" is such an amazingly haunting phrase...
