Contest Time!/~The Ash Award~

March 31, 2019

FREE WRITING

31
Hello, fellow Write-the-Worldians! As promised, I am hosting a contest- and I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!
Before we start: how do I repost a document without losing comments? That will come in handy this month. Please help!
Alrighty, onto the contest. To keep things interesting, I’ve enlisted the help of fellow writer ADM, with whom I share 4th period lunch at school in real life. Love ya, Ash. Now, along with providing input on entries and helping to administer prizes, Ash will choose one/two entries per prompt to award the aptly named “Ash Award.” To note, you can win the Ash Award in conjunction with winning 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, or you can win without placing.
    Now onto the prompts!

Prompt One: Short Story (Tag work with #N.dialogue)

-       Tell a story (almost) entirely through dialogue.
-       Your story must include either the beginning or end of love. Interpret that as you will. Bonus points for creativity ;)
-       Word limit: 200-800 words, including no more than four non-dialogue paragraphs

Prompt Two: Poetry (Tag work with #N.poetry)

-       Write a poem based on your favorite song. Do not include actual lyrics. Please name the song you chose in the footnotes. Bonus points for creativity in interpretation ;)
-       It may be any kind of poem you want (free verse, random rhyme scheme, sonnet, etc.)
-       Word limit: 8-32 lines

    Miscellaneous Rules and Stuff:
-       You can write one entry for each prompt
-       Profanity is allowed
-       An entry can be slightly over the word/line limit, but preferably not under. Feel free to ask if you have concerns about your entry’s length, because I hate when limits mess with aesthetic, y’know?

    Prizes:
-       1st: Six reviews on pieces of your choice, five likes on pieces of my choice, a shoutout in my bio, and a follow from both me and ADM.
-       2nd: Four reviews on pieces of your choice, three likes on pieces of my choice, a shoutout in my bio, and a follow from both me and ADM.
-       3rd: Two reviews on pieces of your choice, one like on a piece of my choice, a shoutout in my bio, and a follow from me
-       Any Honorable Mentions will get a follow and a like
-       The Ash Award: One review of ADM’s choice, advice/help with one work, a shoutout in ADM’s bio, and a follow from ADM.
~Criteria for winning includes creativity, quality, and diversity~
~Criteria for Ash Award includes creativity, quality, duality, and ideally makes us cry~

Due Date: March 31st, 2019. Yes, you read that right; that is over a full month. Go nuts.
All entries are due by 11:59 PM EST.

Phew, that was a lot! It’s totally understandable if you have questions- feel free to comment below if so. ADM will also be posting a similar document, a bit more centered on the Ash Award portion. I hope the two of us are able to answer any questions so everything goes smoothly.
Please leave a link to your entry in the comments of this work. Good luck to all!!!

is this okay? I have more than four paragraphs/sentences that are more like descriptions and inner thoughts- is that fine?

Alright, thank you... I'll see what I can do:)

Good question- we prefer that if you'd like to use movements, please keep it to about a sentence long. If you choose to do movements, similar to the paragraphs (which is a general term, it doesn't have to be a six-sentence ordeal or anything), please don't exceed over 4 non-dialogue sentences. ;)

  • -writinginhopesofsomeday-

Question: is it okay for the dialogue to be interrupted by movements or such instead of paragraphs of no dialogue?

Oh, I'm really sorry. I thought I mentioned in the footnotes, hehe. But, anyway, I used Symphony by Clean Bandit!

Here's my piece. That was quite fun!

  • N.

It can include the name, as long as it doesn't include any additional lyrics. And yes, the piece can be already published as long as it wasn't for another contest, user-hosted or otherwise, but I would prefer you either republish it with the hashtag or post a link in the comments. :)

  • Majestically Awkward Manatee

And can the piece already be published? Do I need to republish it with the hashtag? Or are you not accepting pieces that are old?

  • Majestically Awkward Manatee

I think I'm gonna enter. I really like the poetry prompt!!!

Also, can the poem include the name of the song???

  • nezi_nes

    Alright, thanks :)

  • N.

@nezi_nes as long as it wasn't entered in a previous contest, that's fine!

  • nezi_nes

I've written a piece that fits one of your categories, would you allow submission of already published pieces? Or would you want them completely new?

  • Christy Wisdom

Cool! I'll probably enter at least that part, maybe the other :)

  • N.

    @ChristyWisdom that's perfectly fine!

  • Christy Wisdom

I have a question: if we wanted to, could we base our poetry off of an instrumental song?

  • N.

And thank you so much, Kahasai! I wish I'd known how to do that sooner... :)

  • ADM

    Budding Mae
N and I say yes, because thoughts are internal dialogue. If you end up entering, I look forward to seeing your work (:

  • Kahasai

To republish a piece without losing the comments/likes, go to the "manage versions" link at the top of the published version. That link will give you a list of the saved versions. One of them will say "published" beside it. Click the drop down option beside the name of the version and hit "unpublish version." Once it's unpublished, you click that SAME version and hit "publish for peer review." Then you go through the normal process of writing out "Message to Writers" and choose whether or not to allow peer reviews.

Great competition! I hope you get a lot of entries.

  • pencils.and.paper.roses

Oooh, cool! Can we do lines that are thoughts, rather than dialogue?
