Elevator's Music

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

As the steel sheets unfold, I revoke the flatness
    of my fingers, tremblings
too violent to be the movement
of machine. Lately, my body peels

at the muscle, pellucid epidermis suggestive
of exhaustion -- but I tender further,
I soften, for I always assumed there would be
at least one organ rotting inside

even the best of us. Then the metal doors close
    behind me like fingers clasping
each other in inevitable prayer,
    unsought farewell.

What if everything I love...

An Act of Remembering

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

Gazing towards the horizon,

I wonder,
Where have you gone ?
Will I watch you smile again ?

Racing white horses where you once flew,
Over the waves on your balanced board.

I wonder,
Where have you gone ?
Will I hear your laugh again ?

Turquoise covers my shoulders.

Turquoise like the sea.

Turquoise like we remember you.

I can see,
You cheering for me,
As I crash along the waves.
But when I blink,
You fade away.

And...

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

We demand an apology from those who came before, shaking our misery at them with war-torn eyes. The pieces of history they gave us are whirlwinds of responsibility, and condemnation is second nature as we reflect dread off of our trembling shoulders. But what if we stopped pointing our fingers? What if we respected the battles they fought? What if we opened our arms and said, "Thank you. Thank you for being here first. My heart may be...

Epiphany

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

There she was,
squirming on the bed.
Coughing out white foam,
half her brain was dead.

“Her time has come!”
But her time was gone.
After all, she was
one of His pawns...

I looked up to Him
but He was under a shroud.
His home was engulfed by
the smirking ominous clouds.

Helpless, I stared
at her pleading eyes.
But what could I do?
Only He rolls the dice.

Her wrinkled hands trembled
and I clutched them tight.
For...

Pieces of shattered glass

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

Men of bad habits and women with lipstick-stained glasses,
they dance all night in their pretty palaces.
While we search for love in the ashes.

Three years of hospital rooms,
I learned to find comfort in those clean white walls.
Holding my mother’s hand as the fumes
of antiseptic, threaten to overwhelm me.

His entrance causes everyone to stare.
they waltz under the bright lights and quick whispers.
Yet blood on his hands, he runs towards to the woods in...

Life's A Journey

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

Life's a journey
Of delight and despair
As time flies through the air
Enjoy every bite
Because every journey has a beginning and an end
There are good chapters and bad chapters
Filled with obstacles and adventures
You are the traveller in your journey
What do you choose?
Remember, the path you choose
Leads you to your fate

You fall
Deep into the black hole
It swallows you whole
You swing your arms wildly in panic
Hoping
Hoping someone would...

Oh, To Be A Star

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

Lying in my yard,
I stare into the night,
Fascinated by the stars,
Shining oh so bright.

One thought crosses my mind,
As I am entranced by their shimmer,
What would it be like to shine,
To be a part of that glimmer?

Oh, to be a star,
Glowing in the night;
Guiding someone's pathway,
Providing them with Light.

Oh, to be a star,
Charted and known by any;
Standing out proud,
Yet surrounded by many.

Oh, to be a...

Seasonal Love (with Spoken Words Poetry)

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

When love arrived, the breeze swept softer than heather flowers,
spring aroma accompanied by movie cliches
love was dressed in a soccer t-shirt,
hair colored borrowed from Chrysanthemum, symbolizing love and happiness,
my piano beats synced with my heartbeats,
ebony blueish dress, I always sat there on the bench,
adoring you, feeling spring stole my heart, soaked every taste I never tasted
I wanted to decorate myself for you,
somewhere lying under a blanket of lilies of the valley, bluebells,  ...

A Formal Apology to my Past Self

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

I’m sorry
This wasn’t supposed to be our story
We had so much planned
I know you never wanted me to be this sad

I’m sorry
But the pressure of getting older
Crushes you in ways we were not aware
Teenage years don't look the way they did on the TV
No beautiful romance for me
No days filled with friends and nights full of parties
School isn't that easy
Dreams feel so out of reach
You thought I would...

My Life is a Symphony

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

Do you ever feel so strongly, you can't feel anything
You have every word in your head, but you can't say what you mean
Everything, everyone i know is gone
The only one i have to listen, is this song
My family won't listen, my friends don't care
I look for help, and nobody's there
On those days, i turn to song
Those beautiful lyrics know me better than anyone
When music sounds, my heart does lie
Filling with magic,...

those words I hear in my head

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

those voices in my head keep telling me what to do and who to be,
they say, "no one wants you, what a fake and fearful heap of messed up dreams"
I push them back, trying to forget,
I don't want to hear/ I don't want to listen to their hatred
but the voices get louder/ louder/ louder
and they shatter my ability to think,
pieces of my intellect lie in fragments on the tired ground
I have lost it...

Colours of the Piano

Black and white.
The keys all in a perfect row.

Bronzed brown.
The small leather stool squeaks quietly every time you sit. A bleached patch in the corner from sitting in the sun for too long.

Orchid Pink
The sound of pureness and satisfaction. Soft and fresh.

Velvety green.
In one way envious and resentful. In another, bountiful and filled with potential. Innocent and carefree.

Bright aquamarine.
Reaching into the sky with a smile on your face. A vivid feeling.

I wanna be the hero, the main character of the show
Not that one side character that dies in the first episode
I wanna be remembered

her crown sat atop her hair

each question asked makes her brim with

all focused on their own opinions.
her hand touches mine, concealed
by her skirt and the table and
    their blindness to their surroundings.
in her touch, i know she knows,

room full of people who might
tear us apart.

Many think the word cancer is another word for death

Cancer doesn’t mean death
It doesn’t mean you’re doomed
Although many will tell you to say your goodbyes now
Others will wonder the what, when, why and how
Cancer is a strange thing

The boys here look at your Anarkali suit
like boys back home look at your jeans-
down the sequins on your long black gown
to the anklets that howl like caged monkeys
when you try to move.

There're boys everywhere-
they say they don't gawk,
they'll protect you if others do
because you're special: you're a woman
alone in the subway.

You wonder when you dance for them
whether they see the art or the artist,
whether your shawl has...
