Waves/Grocery shopping during a pandemic

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

     –Me?

     –Are you talking to me?

     Ma’am
I have been whittled into a wave
to break over and over carelessly.
I rinsed it free of life—
     Crashing down time and
space    Time and again
     until symbiosis was a biology
flashcard I forgot about    Next
     the cold settled
on my pupils
     brimful of ebbing flame.
I’ve been indulging in fracturing apart ...

My Life is a Symphony

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

Do you ever feel so strongly, you can't feel anything
You have every word in your head, but you can't say what you mean
Everything, everyone i know is gone
The only one i have to listen, is this song
My family won't listen, my friends don't care
I look for help, and nobody's there
On those days, i turn to song
Those beautiful lyrics know me better than anyone
When music sounds, my heart does lie
Filling with magic,...

Cosmic Soup

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

My mom makes soup on Sundays and freezes the leftovers
for bitter winter days when even the stove needs a woolen sweater
Sometimes when she needs help, I am recruited to sharpen
the knife - not that one, that one is for the bones - and chop
vegetables for the mirepoix - carrots, onions, celery -
and then the potatoes are quartered and added into the mix

The earth is a potato (raw potatoes are as tough as rocks), and...

Life's A Journey

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

Life's a journey
Of delight and despair
As time flies through the air
Enjoy every bite
Until your last fight
Because each journey has a beginning and an end
There are good and bad chapters
Filled with obstacles and adventures
You are the traveller in your journey
What do you choose?
Remember, the path you create
Leads you to your fate

You fall
Deep into the black hole
It swallows you whole
You swing your arms wildly in panic
In...

dragon heart and dragon love

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

i want to be a dragon.
i want to be the ruler of skies, dancer of clouds, eater of lightning - how curious and fun the freedom of flight! the waltz of the day and night fit wonderfully within each other's hands, and i want to be part of that dance too.
i want to hoard and take and keep within my lair and gobble up fools who dare to presume on my hoard.
how dare you!
how dare you! ...

Happiness

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

What is happiness?
Is it something that glows in the darkness of day? Is it something that you feel, not say?
What is happiness?
Do we truly know, when it comes or when it goes?
Who has it and how do we know? Is it a seed planted in you that grows?
Does happiness last forever or does it die off like a broken dream? Does it shatter like glass beneath your feet?
Is happiness what you have when...

She Is Everything That I Am Not

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

I would not say we were happy,
I look back and realize that I was not.
I spent days waiting for you to call me,
Months waiting for you to make me feel appreciated,
And years waiting to be given the male validation I sought.

I begged for the bare minimum,
I begged for you to talk to me,
I begged for you to make me feel valued.
You told me you would,
You lied.
I was given nothing.
So...

The perfect world
By: Esther
waiting for first flowers fall.
Deep emeralds still standing proud and tall.
Clear air and soft winds.

A world we dream both black and white.
Can combine in community.
A world, women can walk alone.
A dream that the stateless  have opportunity.

Where greed doesn't suck the sap of the soul.
A world we don't scare the unknown.

The Art in Color

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

I couldn’t color a stick figure head brown.

I know I would rather color the feet
black or brown because

Crayon disintegrates the color
across the cheeks

And makes beauty
dirt.

My melanin is too dark for homework,
but just right for horror films and Devil’s cake

B-L-A-C-K
tattooed on my wood body

wracking my skull
I am a person of color.

Sun inscribes identity with
paint that won’t come off

walls, boxing me in this mud
Like a shade...

Gorgeous Gift, of Life

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

My knuckles, white
My fingers, shaking
A vibration so immense,
My arm shakes, too
My breath begins to shallow
My vision darkens
I pull myself up into her eyes
And think about

The way the sun
Creeps in through my curtains
In the morning
Splashing the room
With yellow light

The way I could wake up on the floor,
Unbothered
For where I lay was
Home

The way the the pages turned
Crisply, underneath my fingertips
Crinkling as I inhaled...

Have you ever felt at home in a place you have never been?
Because I have.
I have never felt that warm Atlantic water
But my cheeks have been caressed by hot tears
And that is enough
I am connected to this place
That I walk, and then
R    U    N
Freely
And happily
Through in all of my dreams
There is a house by the bluffs
Surrounded by seagrass waving with smiling fronds
Sunbaked beige stucco whispers of lives...

“A tool for dialogue and healing.” That’s how the British spoken word artist Sukina Douglas describes poetry. Poems, American poet Jane Hirschfield explains, take fragments of the human experience and “make [something] new by rejoining parts into a visibly changed whole.”

At a time, when the world needs to come together, when the pieces need to be reassembled, it seems poetry might offer a way through. “My experience,” Hirschfield says, “is that every truly good poem has in it,...

Stars

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

I see the stars in our eyes
And, oh, it makes me want to fly

I can see the world around me clearer
It’s coming closer and closer, it’s coming nearer

This rotation is never going to stop
The world will never freeze and our hearts will never stop

The ocean is the force of our hands,
Raising up towards the sky; make the people meet our demands

Because we are the people of everything
We create all and we...

In My Dreams

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

Sometimes, I want to run, run away, into the darkness.
In this world, I let my angry thoughts take me into a universe of mental circuitry.
I see my future and my hopes, I pray for protection.
I want to run home, but I can't.
I am trapped.
Why?
Why?
Why can't I stop?
Why can't -
Finally, I stop.
And I realize that it was all a dream.
