On January 20th, 2021, the first Youth Poet Laureate of the United States stunned the world with “The Hill We Climb
”, the powerful poem she delivered at the inauguration of President Biden and Vice President Harris. Long before Gorman took the national stage, however, she was lauded for her courageous, clear-eyed writing about the climate crisis. “The climate poet for our time,” she’s already been hailed.
In her 2018 poem “Earthrise” she wrote:
Climate change is the single greatest challenge of our time,
Of this, you’re certainly aware.
It’s saddening, but I cannot spare you
From knowing an inconvenient fact, because
It’s getting the facts straight that gets us to act and not to wait.
So I tell you this not to scare you,
But to prepare you, to dare you
To dream a different reality…
The time is
Let’s “act and not wait,” dear writers. Listen
to Gorman recite “Earthrise”, and then write your own poem on the single greatest challenge of our time.
