Sick

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2019

stick out your tongue
i can see the sick
we're in the halfway place
never seemed much of a fit
art from smudged mascara
pretend you never saw her
tug some lashes out and swear to god you didn't wanna
touch base with your old friends
did you even know them back then
way back when, in the fulled up place
never seemed to be it

so stick out your tongue
i can't see the sick
we're in the closed...

JUST KEEP SMILING

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2019

Mirthless laughter spills from my mouth
Contorting; caressing; consoling;
An empty promise,
Lead by your aching eyes
As I sympathize and hypothesize
And I try to distinguish
Between the grin and the grimace
As the blacks turn to green
And the blues turn to red,
And I ask myself:
What good is this world
When it’s all in my head?
Steel eyes become stone
As I wonder and wallow
and wish myself home
But the shelves they go empty
And...

Getting Older

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2019

i now have to know my future.
i have to see myself making moves,
moving into a college dorm.
i have to be confident that I will succeed,
because,
it is no one else's job.
i have to fund raise for an opportunity that will boost my resume out from the piles of hopeful others,
but can i?
i know i can, but it's hard to say.
will i be able to put myself out there,
ready to be...

Mahogany Lover

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2019

Mahogany lover,
let down your treads and beads.
Unveil your spiraled wood
and show your leafy green.
Extend your chestnut fingers
And brush my ancient skin.
Indulge my thoughts that linger
of you and and I akin.
With a low clunking tremble
beat your densely packed chest
and call the birds of the forest
to perch your fortified breast.

Call all the deer,
call father Time.
Make me eternal—
I’ll make you mine .

Silence the wood
and the very...

Thanksgiving Day. 2018.
Enter a room full of family.
All eyes on you.

You stand still.
Voices fill your ears.

"Are you ready to graduate?"
"Ready to leave?"
"Ready for college life?"
"Ready to achieve?"

"College is important"
"Where are you going"
"College is difficult"
"Won't be easygoing"

"Have you thought of the future?"
"Thought about the past?"
"Thought about your friendships?"
"Think they will last?"

"What will you do after?"
"After you leave?" ...

I delve into the rabble of man,
Laid out like a sample of divine desire.
Eyes squinting, voices rising, numbing my plan.
With blindness profound, I deny perusal,
And I become you, chasing darkness entire.

They Stare

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2019

Some describe me as an emotion,
A belief,
Or they even describe me as a feeling of terror

I am a limitation people set for themselves,
their imagination in the way,
Or for some I’m a nightmare

People don’t usually approach me,
They just come and look at me from a distance,
They stare

They stare in agony,
They stare and the thoughts of me rush through their head
They stare and pain runs across their face

From a distance...

The Well of Memories

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2019

I am the well where water is always rising and rising
Of memories forgotten in minds, slowly closing

Lives of the elapsed exist in my waters
I’ll help you recall your sons and daughters

Pain is here, along with sorrow too
The happy memories are fading, seeming untrue

Ripples spread out, from the stones you’ve dropped
Of ancient reminiscence, you were incapable of

Deeds through ages go uncounted for,
There’s so much to remember of the...

Opening here, not began, haven't started, new lifespan.
Writing lines, black as coal, broken heart, mending soul.
Go to sleep, find light rest, open pages, I'm the guest.
Twelve
Countless hours, spent inside, painting backwards, without a guide.
Puzzling pieces, shoved apart, finally fit, perfect art.
Simply honest, yelling loud, hitting pillows, no longer cowed.
Eleven
Dashing snow, stringing words, laughing silent, singing birds.
Reclaimed innocent, back outside, rushing fields, taken stride.
Words are spoken,...

Canned tomatoes, name brand
Pillars scraped by the sky
Staring down, eagle eye.

Trivia

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2019

Why do I feel so close to you?
All the things I see are like an illusion
The same day keeps instilling confined dreams to me
Slipping my mask, I realized I’m a concept of my own mind

You will recognize me then
Hard to believe that the heart changes everything
Vast oceans and empty shadows
I laugh trying to comfort myself

That anguish that broke me
I danced through it behind your eyes
As if I’m a criminal...

All I want is understanding.

I do hate parties.
A place where I am
Expected to make small talk
To people who are not
Respected. No,
Not at all.
They squawk like fools
About their day,
Though I hadn't even asked,
With nothing else
Left to say, nothing else
To show for
Themseleves.

Strangers like these,
They disinterest me.
I try well to please
With the fake smile
Stretched on my face.
I do beguile these ones;
I hope I...

Although you sit silent, you feel your skin cook.
You feel the glare, and hear the howls of a million beasts.
Can the scathing poison spit from hissing jaws rattle your armor?
The world is ending they told me, we will all perish under a blaze.
They all hate you, hate your very being, all stitched from star dust, nevertheless they hate you.
Is it true?
Is it honest words that flow from their mouths?
Of course said the man...

Waiting
She thought she was right
But so did he
She thought he loved her
But he did
Anger and rag
Both hating each other
Both crying silently
Well, where is love?
In the best moments,
its here
In the worst,
its not
Thoughts in their head
about everything
They love each others
or did
Sometimes, in these times
we loose control
of life
of love

My fingertips map the circular scars,
raised burns atop your upper arms.
You told me they are only
cigarette burns
from your “no-good step father”
Leaving me questioning what to believe
whilst one cigarette butt lights the next for you.
Your thick, dark eyebrows crinkled together
whenever you complained about the emptiness.
The more I know you the more I realize it was the contrary
you were too full of flame.
Your lips pursed around nicotine filled paper so long ...

I’m an eighteen year old girl
Facing the challenges of the world
I feel compelled to handle them on my own,
Why ask for help when you should be strong and bold?

I'm an eighteen year old girl
Listening to voices around the world
We live in a scary place
Is it really our home?

I'm an eighteen year old girl
I shouldn't feel afraid to walk home alone
But I do, and everyday,
I make a silent pray that I...

STORM

The wind whips the trees, swinging them back and forth.
The rain fell hard, unlike the usual soothing sound that drips on the window.
Power lines destroyed by fallen branches.
The dark spinning figure approached my street.
It greeted us by ripping off roofs and breaking house windows.

Everyone was panicked, some screamed, some cried.

I sat in the comfort of my home, swaddled in a blanket.
I was not scared, I was not frightened.
Nothing new to me, I...

Do you appreciate your gifts?
Yesterday's tomorrow is here yet again what will you do with it?

This is our future!

Riveting is the constant growth of our well of knowledge
As infinitesimal as it is vast

A Fork in the Road

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition 2019

Once when I wandered too far into the realm of my own thoughts,
I came across a fork in the road,
with signs pointing to the most obvious path.

Staying true to my indecisive self,
I turned around and asked for directions.
Behind me, sitting among all of my insecurities,
and wearing the most magnificent cloak of deceit,
was my old friend, Self-Doubt.

Since I couldn’t spot a good soul in sight,
I asked her, “which way shall I proceed?” ...
